DANAGIRIGALA
One of the oldest temples remaining
in Mawanella region. In 1785 the temple has
been renovated under the supervision of Lewke disawa following the order of the monarch
of Kandy Sri Rajadi Rajasinghe. The painting of Lewke disawa found inside the vihara is unique.
Lewke Walawwa (The residence of Lewke disawa ) & Vihare belonged to the Walawwa.
Who is Lewke Disawa ?
Was a chief in the kingdom of Kandy
served under the leadership of Kings Sri Rajadi Rajasinghe & Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in late 18th century.
By killing this person another
crime was added to the crime list of Kandy monarch. In 1803 because of the
defeat at Hanwella, Lewke disawa paid the compensation by his life.
